Black Light Party Planning Checklist
Planning a glow party is straightforward once you know what you need. This checklist covers everything from UV lights to decorations to guest communication, with a realistic budget breakdown so you know what to expect.
The Complete Checklist
UV Black Lights (the foundation)
- Determine how many you need based on your room size (typically 1 per 6 to 12 feet of wall space)
- Choose between buying cheap consumer bulbs or renting professional DJ quality UV fixtures (the difference in brightness is significant)
- If renting, reserve at least 2 weeks before your event to guarantee availability
- Plan your power: each of our rental lights includes a 15 foot cord and can be linked together so you need fewer outlets
Glow Supplies and Decorations
-
Glow sticks and bracelets
(hand these out at the door, budget $0.10 to $0.25 each)
-
UV reactive face and body paint
(set up a paint station for guests, about $8 to $15 per set of colors)
-
Neon streamers and balloons
(neon pink, green, yellow, and orange glow the best under UV)
-
White tablecloths
(white glows bright under UV, avoid dark colored table covers)
-
Neon tape
(use it to outline doorways, tables, or create patterns on walls, about $5 per roll)
-
Fluorescent poster board or signs
(write messages, label food stations, or make directional signs)
-
White or neon plates, cups, and napkins
(these glow and cost roughly the same as regular ones)
Room Preparation
- Cover all windows with black trash bags or blackout curtains
- Turn off or cover any light sources you cannot switch off (exit signs, appliance lights, night lights)
- Remove or cover dark colored decor that will not glow (it will just look like a dark blob)
- Clear floor space near walls for black light placement
- Test your setup by turning on the black lights and walking through the space before guests arrive
Guest Communication
- Tell guests to wear white or neon clothing (this is the single most important thing you can do to make the party look amazing)
- Mention that dark clothing will not glow
- Let guests know if you are providing face paint or glow accessories, so they do not buy duplicates
- Send a reminder the day before about the dress code
Music and Atmosphere
- Create a playlist or hire a DJ (the music sets the energy)
- Consider a fog or haze machine to make UV beams visible in the air (optional but dramatic)
- Set up a photo area with extra glow props (guests will want to take pictures)

Buy vs. Rent: Which Makes More Sense?
For a one-time party,
renting professional UV lights is usually the better choice. Consumer black light bulbs from Amazon are cheap ($8 to $15 each) but produce a fraction of the UV output of professional DJ fixtures. You would need 2 to 3 consumer bulbs to match one professional light, and the glow effect is noticeably weaker.
For recurring events,
buying makes more sense if you host glow parties regularly. But keep in mind that consumer bulbs lose UV intensity over time and professional fixtures hold up much longer.
The middle ground:
rent professional lights for the UV and buy the cheap consumable supplies (glow sticks, paint, decorations). This gives you the strongest glow effect without buying equipment you will only use once.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Not making the room dark enough.
Even a small amount of regular light washes out the glow. Cover every window and light source.
-
Not telling guests about the dress code.
Half your guests showing up in dark jeans and black shirts will make the party look dull. Send reminders about wearing white or neon.
-
Using too few lights.
People underestimate how many UV lights they need. Check our room size guide and order 1 to 2 extra as backup.
-
Forgetting to test the setup.
Turn everything on an hour before guests arrive so you can adjust placement and fix any coverage gaps.
